Egon Ronay 1915-2010

Egon Ronay 1915-2010

Saturday 12th June 2010

We were sad to hear of the death on Saturday 12th June of Egon Ronay, who in his time did as much as anyone to improve the standard of British restaurant food.

He first launched his annual restaurant guide in 1956 - entries being free on merit to those who passed the standards of his experienced inspectors. Hotels were added over time, although even now their food often fails to meet dedicated restaurant standards.

In later years he campaigned for the improvement of Motorway food; the fact that celebrity chefs are money-making machines who spend too little time in their kitchens; and for the return of family meals - which, he claimed, were being eroded by TV / sofa dinners.
