Gourmet Britain Awards 2011

Gourmet Britain Awards 2011

Wednesday 18th May 2011

Best Restaurant: Bistrot Bruno Loubet, The Zetter Hotel, St John's Square, 86-89 Clerkenwell Road, London, EC1M 5RJ

A restaurant that encapsulates everything we believe in. A chef, at the top of his game, offering an interesting menu of well-prepared food - with definite flavours and no gimmicks, at affordable prices in pleasant, unstuffy, surroundings - plus excellent, but unobtrusive, service.

Best Vegetarian Restaurant: Kalpna, 2-3 St. Patrick Square, Edinburgh, EH8 9EZ

Although an Indian restaurant, specialising in vegetarian Gujerati and South Indian dishes, we feel this restaurant has unjustly been excluded from national awards - simply because it falls between two stools. It's been run by the Bhartdwaj family for the 25 years of its existence - but 2010 brought an impressive refit, with the additions of wall sconces (produced by Indian artists 'imported' for the occasion).

Many of their dishes are completely untaxing on those not keen on hot spicing.Their set lunch is a particular bargain. See their website for individual restaurant addresses -

Best Ethnic Restaurant: Wings Manchester, Heron House, 1 Lincoln Square, Manchester, M2 5LN

A top-class Cantonese restaurant, also offering comfort and excellent service - plus ungreedy pricing. Don't expect 'fringe' fish and meat cuts - but all the mainstream dishes, plus dim sum, cooked with care.

Best Café / Budget Restaurants: Leon Restaurants, 12830 Great Guildford Street, London, SE1 0HS

This year we have given this award to the Leon Group of restaurants, who offer good honest food in a fun and affordable way. Dishes such as 'Fish Finger Wrap' and 'Moroccan Meatballs' set the style - and we are impressed with the manner in which they have combined ethical-sourcing to what is essentially fast food.

Best Gastro Pub: The Sportsman, Faversham Road, Seasalter, Whitstable, Kent, CT5 4BP

In an age when pub food is going from strength to strength, a few in each area of the country really stand out and would compete with the best restaurants, if food alone is the only criteria. The Sportsman has few or any peers in these stakes - offering beautifully-cooked seasonal food without the distraction of plush comforts.

Well worth a special trip, particularly if your weakness is seafood.

Best Hotel: Stapleford Park, Stapleford, Nr. Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, LE14 2EF

Set in 500 acres of parkland laid out by Capability Brown, this house - built by the Sherard family in the 17th century, was turned into this splendid hotel by the late Bob Peyton.

It continues to offer a unique combination of individually-designed luxurious bedrooms, plus top-class service and good food.

Plus, their combination of activities - ranging from golf through archery to a school of falconry - make Stapleford a unique establishment. Children are especially encouraged, with summer camps plus an enormous list of exciting activities.

Best B & B or Restaurant with Rooms: Anchor Inn at Lower Froyle, Lower Froyle, Nr. Alton, Hampshire, GU34 4NA

This pub/restaurant with rooms - belonging to a small group - stands out among all the places inspected this year.

If you are seeking comfortable accommodation in the countryside, but within striking distance of London - with good food on tap - but not wanting the bustle of a hotel, the Anchor is perfect. Great care has been taken to make the place fun, as it's jam-packed with historical mementos - including excellent reading material in the bedrooms.

Best Independently-Owned Shop: Unicorn, 89 Albany Road, Chorlton-cum-Hardy, Manchester, M21 0BN

An excellent organic grocer & greengrocer - offering an enormous selection of produce - much with detailed local provenance. Every greengrocer we know would benefit from a visit here.

Best Artisan Producer: Weald Smokery, Mount Farm, Flimwell, East Sussex, TN5 7QLA top-class smokery offering a wide range of products - ranging from Smoked Lancashire Cheese through Smoked Salmon & Eels to Smoked Lamb, traditionally-smoked over oak in brick kilns. If you don't live in their locality, they also offer an efficient Mail Order service.

Best Mail/Internet Order Supplier: Natoora, 3g Hewlett House, Havelock Terrace, London, SW8 4AS

What started in a small way in Paris in 2001, has expanded over the Channel and grown into a top class grocer/butcher/fishmomger - delivering to most parts of the British mainland.

Quality is the name of the game - and as well as retail customers, they now supply some of the countries best restaurants. British food is well to the fore - and provenance given.
