The Importance of buying organic apples

Tuesday 20th December 2005

A new report says that many apples are automatically being sprayed with 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP), sold as SmartFresh. It was approved for use in the European Union earlier this year, despite findings that even low levels have shown to be carcinogenic in animals. Its purpose is to seriously increase the shelf life of the fruit. So much so, that some supermarkets in Britain have being displaying fruit from the 'old' 2004 European crop, the 2005 Southern hemisphere crop and the new Northern hemisphere crop on adjacent shelves.
