The results of a survey, conducted by The Compassion in World Farmng Trust, has just been published. This rated British supermarkets on the percentage of chickens and pigs had been confined to excessively small living areas. Some are still selling pigs/pork that have been reared on 'stall farms' - these have been banned for British pigs since 1999 (but not in some other countries). Waitrose faired best - scoring 49.3 out of 60 - Asda worst with 20.8 out of 60. If the living conditions of some of these animals was witnessed, their meat might be hard to swallow - this also applies to the eggs from battery chickens.

Melton Mowbray Pork Pies

Although the fact that Melton Mowbray Pork Pies have been given their own protection under EU law, it should by realised that the cottage industry originally built up because of the increasing popularity of Stilton cheese. The curds from local cows' milk were used for the cheese, so slowly, a local industry built up using the leftover whey to feed pigs. Pork/Pork Pies then became a second winner.

It's excellent news that the RSPCA managed to rustle-up over 200,000 signatures on their on-line petition to stop our French 'partners' using live dogs, as shark bait off the Indian Ocean Island of Reunion. As much pressure as can be put on them to ban this outlandish practice, largely relies on outside pressure - just a letter to your local French embassy might help. A new survey believes that about 10% of children with nut allergies, will outgrow them. A EU directive stands making it compulsory for manufacturers to mention any food that 'might' have been handled by those coming into contact with nuts, to mention it on their label. It's estimated that 2-3% of the British population suffer from food allergies of some sort or another.
