Scabbard Fish Black Scabbard Fish / Espada

A long, thin eel-like fish, growing up to 1.5 metres and belonging to the Trichiuridae family - it is sometimes known as "Black Scabbard Fish. It inhabits the waters of the North Atlantic as far north as Northern Canada and Norway (as well as in the Far East), but is most prevalent off the coast of Portugal.

If you find one on your fishmongers slab the thicker sections can be grilled or baked, and is popular in Portugal made into escabeche. See 'Escabeche'
