A thick, piquant condiment, made with either fruit or vegetables. The tradition originates in the Indian Sub-Continent. The word derives from the Indian 'chutni' now spelt 'chatni'.
Chutneys are preserved in a balanced mixture of sugar and vinegar; and vary from mild, to very highly spiced.
