Coconut; How to crack

To deal with a fresh coconut, first hammer a scewer into the three holes in the top, and drain out the milk. Then place the coconut in a carrier bag, to protect your eyes, before giving it a hard bash with a hammer. Remove the pieces from the bag and prise the hard shell away from the kernel with the point of a heavy knife. The inner brown skin can be removed with a potato peeler. See 'Coconut'
