Coconut Products in the Supermarket
Whole fresh coconut:
Desiccated coconut: found in the baking section - grated coconut.(This can be used to make coconut milk by pouring 300ml (½ pint) of boiling water over 225g (8 oz) of desiccated coconut. When cool, press through a fine sieve and squeeze to extract as much liquid as possible. The process can be repeated for a thinner second extraction.
Shredded coconut: found in the baking section, but heavily sweetened, unlike desiccated coconut.
Creamed coconut: this comes in a solid block form, and shouldn't be confused with coconut cream.
Coconut oil: you might find this in the ethnic food section. It's often used for frying in Caribbean and southern Indian cooking.
Coconut milk powder: this can be added to cakes or is ideal for making coconut ice cream.
