Cola nut/kola nut
This come from a tree growing in tropical West Africa, and are also cultivated in South America. These nuts contain caffeine and the heart stimulant kolanin, so have an invigorating effect.
They also have effect as an appetite-suppressant, so their use was encouraged by those managing the slave trade (who by their use could transport more slaves and carry less food) - the cultivation of Coca in Africa had already been tried without success.
