A salad, made from finely shredded white cabbage dressed with mayonnaise. Shredded carrot, chopped apple and onion are sometimes added.
The name is derived from the Dutch 'koolsla' - combining kool (meaning cabbage), with 'sla' meaning salad. This was made easier, as in the early 19th century 'cole' was an alternative English name for cabbage. See 'Cabbage'
