The name of the daisy family that includes the likes of Jerusalem artichokes and the globe artichoke (with its thistle-like flower heads). Other edible members of the family are dandelions (the leaves of which make good salads if blanched - the stalks having laxative properties), and sunflowers (grown for the oil from their seeds).
