Date Shell (Lithophaga lithophaga)

A bivalve belonging to the mytilidae family, so related to the mussel. They live in the Mediterranean and are known as "datte de mer" in France, and " dattero di mare" in Italy.

If found on your fishmongers slab, they are good eaten raw, and also make excellent soup. See 'Bivalve'; 'Shellfish'
