Dolittle, Dr

The fictional hero of stories written by Hugh Lofting (1886-1947). Dolittle was a vegetarian who could talk to animals, and wouldn"t eat the flesh of his friends.

It has been said that man is the only animal that eats his friends; and early agrarian societies tended to avoid eating the flesh of the plough cattle which were their working companions, and this may lie behind India"s sacred cows and the age-old avoidance of beef in Japan.
