Endorphins

Natural substances that modify the action of nerve cells. Endorphins are produced by the pituitary gland, and lower the perception of pain by reducing the transmission of signals between nerve cells.

Exercise stimulates their production, giving a feeling of well-being; and there is some evidence that eating hot spices has a similar effect.
