Evelyn; John (1620-1706)

English diarist and author who was a friend of Pepys. He had a particular interest in food and gardening and wrote a book called "Acetaria" full of good vegetable dishes. He also wrote an excellent salad planner giving himself instructions on when to plant out his rocket, lamb"s lettuce, nasturtiums etc. This gives us an interesting insight into the culinary habits of the times, which were as adventurous as any now.

The rather dull food that became fashionable in Britain following the marriage of Victoria to Albert did our international culinary reputation no good at all, as it"s only recently that we have started to grow some the more interesting food of our forefathers!

If you enjoy cooking take a minute to look at ‘Simon Scrutton French Cookery Classes’ on Google – and learn how to make top class bistro-style dishes. Suitable for beginners upwards. Small classes.
