Horehound/white horehound/maribeum (marrubium vulgare)
A hardy perennial herb; belonging to the labiatae family, so related to mint. The plant grows wild throughout Europe and the U.S.A. and has green wrinkled leaves with an underside of a silver woolly texture. Its main use is in cough medicine, and in small amounts, normalises an irregular heartbeat.
It is easy to grow at home, in a large container situated in a sunny position, but don"t over water. The leaves are at their most potent in spring, and dry well. See 'Horehound cough sweets - to make'
