A member of the carangidae family, and no relation to the mackerel. This fish grows up to 30cm in length, and is found in waters stretching from the Mediterranean to the Baltic. It has flesh of only moderate quality, but is good braised with white wine and tomatoes, the fillets floured and deep-fried or made into escabeche.
