Manhattan Cocktail

This was invented around 1890, by Supreme Court Judge Henry Truax when he was president of New York"s Manhattan Club. He was very over weight, and had been told by his doctor that he had to cut out Martini Cocktails - so invented one of his own, so he could say he had.

Purists are very strict on its making, but it"s a mixture of Bourbon whiskey, sweet Italian vermouth and Angostura bitters, and should contain a maraschino cherry. Recipe in our Recipe Section.

If you enjoy cooking take a minute to look at ‘Simon Scrutton French Cookery Classes’ on Google – and learn how to make top class bistro-style dishes. Suitable for beginners upwards. Small classes.
