A fish mainly living on the North American Atlantic coast.
You may find one on your fishmongers slab amongst the "exotics", in which case they may be grilled whole, are filleted and fried.
They sometimes go under the name of Common Jack or Crevalle. Sometimes in Britain, small sardines are known as "jacks".

If you enjoy cooking take a minute to look at ‘Simon Scrutton French Cookery Classes’ on Google – and learn how to make top class bistro-style dishes. Suitable for beginners upwards. Small classes.
