Lavender (Lavandula Officinalis)

A hardy evergreen perennial plant belonging to the labiatae family, and native to the Mediterranean region, but possibly arriving there from India. The Romans, who used in their baths (hence the name - derived from "lava" to wash) introduced it to Britain; but it then remains unmentioned until Tudor times, when it was noticed that its fragrance eased stiff joints and relieved tiredness.

There are many varieties, with flowers ranging from white, to pink and blue; but all have narrow aromatic leaves.

Lavender grows well in containers, and this is generally best away from the South of England; it likes sunny, well-drained, fertile soil.
