Name given to British sailors, initially by American seamen, after their daily ration of lemon juice (to counteract scurvy) was replaced by lime juice - which was more easily procured from the West Indies. Lime juice actually has less vitamin C than its lemon equivalent, so was actually so effective. See also "Grog"
