La Merenda

The Italian traditional equivalent of a modern "packed lunch". This might comprise prosciutto crudo, a rustic loaf and some tomatoes. This would probably be accompanied by some local wine. The derivation comes from the Latin merum meaning pure, and the Italian word mero meaning wine that hasn"t been tampered with - as wine shouldn"t be drunk without food, it is consumed with a merenda.
