A family of sea fish including the dogfish and skate; most edible sharks are the smaller, less ferocious varieties.

Worldwide, sharks are being over-fished at an alarming rate. The latest figures (2001) are that 730,000 tonnes are landed every year, directly threatening their long-term survival. Some are long-lived and slow to mature; others have low reproductive rate - so many species are now at risk.
