Squid (Loligo Forbesi)

This form of squid inhabits the north-east Atlantic, as far south as the English Channel. Further south, and in the Mediterranean, it is replaced by its cousin (logigo vulgaris) - which is called Encornet in France, Calamari in Italy and Calamar in Spain - which is similar and can be treated in the same manner.

Squid resemble an elongated octopus, and can grow up to 60cm (possibly 40cm making up the body length) with a narrow sack-like body with triangular wings supporting eight main tentacles plus two longer feeding tentacles. In Britain, they are most oftenly seen, sliced into rings and deep-fried. They can be found in this way in the deep-freezes of many large supermarkets.
