Britain"s food market is now dominated by five big supermarket groups: in order of size, they are Tesco, Sainsbury, Asda, Safeway and Somerfield. Between them they account for more than 80% of all grocery sales. Supermarket total profits are much greater than the combined income of all UK farmers markets put together.
Each new major supermarket in a city, has been found to cause up to 200 job losses, mainly from other surrounding shops.
