Turkey; Traditional Farmfresh Turkey Association (TFTA) Standards

The best turkey breeders in the UK follow these standards - Turkeys must be grown for a minimum of 18 weeks, fed on a mainly cereal diet free of antibiotics and growth promoters.

Barn-reared birds must be kept at a stocking density at or below that laid down by the Animal Welfare code, in naturally lit and ventilated buildings on a bedding of freshly topped-up straw or soft wood shavings.

Free-range birds must have access to daylight and open-air runs after eight weeks, with an area mainly covered by vegetarian of at least six square metres per bird. For the nearest farmer to you abiding by these rules phone TFTA on 01323-899802; Fax: 01323-899583, or use one of the recommended turkey suppliers in are Mail Order Section.
