Twaite Shad (Alosa Fallax)

A European white fish of the herring family, but generally larger - reaching a length of up to 50cm. Twaite Shads are found around Britain, and as far north as the Baltic. They are unusual in the fact that they migrate up rivers to spawn; indeed there are landlocked communities found in the lakes of Killarney, in Southern Ireland.

If found, they can be treated in the same way as herrings, but as they are bigger, so are the bones, and these can be a fiddle if not removed. See 'Herring'; 'Twaite Shad'
