A colourless spirit originating in Russia (but traditional throughout Easter Europe), distilled mainly from wheat or potatoes.

The neutral taste of the spirit has made it popular world-wide, making it a good base for Martinis and other cocktails. Some are infused with fruit or herbs to give added interest; while plain vodka is the perfect accompaniment to caviar. Different vodkas range from about 65º proof to more than 98º proof.
