There are three main types of broccoli grown today.
1. annual green or purple broccoli - maturing in summer - generally known as "calabrese".
2. "romanesco" - maturing in late summer and autumn - this resembles a lose form of cauliflower, with groups of buds arranged in spirals.
3.sprouting broccoli (illustrated) - an overwintering annual or perennial, ready in early spring - this can be white or purple.
