A, generally cheap, French-style restaurant (often with a romantic atmosphere). The word possibly comes from a similar Russian word, meaning 'quickly'. Bistro's or more often bistrot's started to appear in France around the end of the 19th century - the city of Lyon being a particular stronghold - and the idea has spread worldwide.
