A traditional type of German/Swiss cake, dating back to medieval times, when it had a religious aspect.

There are two main types, the first being a form of honey cake (and in the past a speciality of monks who kept bees) and gingerbread. The honey variety often comes shaped as a heart, while the ginger, as a witch's house.
