Gourmet Britain / GB Awards 2009

Best Restaurant: The Walnut Tree, Llandewi Skirrid, Nr. Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, NP7 8AW    Made famous by Franco Taruschio during his stint of over 30 years, this famous restaurant retired to the doldrums under successive well-intentioned chefs on his departure. Its good name has been restored under the guidance of Shaun Hill – maybe the only chef who could have managed the feat – perhaps born for the role. (

Best Ethnic Restaurant: Yang Sing, 34 Princess Street, Manchester, MI 4JY    For years one of the countries foremost Chinese restaurants. (

Best Gastro Pub: The Hole in the Wall, 2 High Street, Little Wilbraham, Cambridgeshire, CB21 5JY   An excellent gastro pub, where locals can still enjoy real ales, without being made to feel unwelcome. The experience of ex-chef Stephen Bull is there in the background. (

Best Vegetarian Restaurant: Terre à Terre, 71 East Street, Brighton, East Sussex, BN1 1HQ      A vegetarian restaurant like no other we know. No lentil bakes here, just delicious modern dishes, good enough to satisfy dedicated carnivores. (

Best Café/Budget Restaurant: Wahaca Covent Garden, 66 Chandos Place, Covent Garden, London, WC2N 4HG   An excellent Mexican-style restaurant, where you can eat carefully-sourced food in a buzzy atmosphere. Far removed from most pseudo-Mexican's. (

Best Independent Food Shop: Valvona & Crolla, 19 Elm Row, Edinburgh, EH7 4AA    A top class and long-standing delicatessen, which could be a model for all others. (

Best Mail Order Food Supplier: Forman & Field, Stour Road, Fish Island, London, E3 2NT  From the roots of H. Forman's London Smoked Salmon, has grown this excellent online almost 'one-stop' shop. They have gathered some of Britain's best artisan producers onto one website. (

Best Artisan Producer: Hobbs House Bakery, Unit 6, Chipping Edge Estate, Hatters Lane, Chipping Sodbury, BS37 6AA  Excellent artisan bakers, having their own shops in Chipping Sodbury, Nailsworth & Tetbury – but supplying many other local shops with their top-quality breads and seasonal items. (

Best Hotel: Newick Park Hotel, Newick, Nr. Lewes, East Sussex, BN8 4SB   An impressive Country House Hotel, where you can stay and eat luxuriously without breaking the bank. Their facilities include the likes of clay-pigeon shooting, badminton, quad biking and tank driving. (

Best Hotel Chain: Best Western – ( - While not strictly speaking a chain, but a large group of independently-owned hotels, sharing their marketing. Each has its own character and fills the middle market ideally – both for the private and business customers.

Best B & B: Bradford Old Windmill, 4 Masons Lane, Bradford-on-Avon, Nr. Bath, Wiltshire, BA15 1QN   This small B & B is a complete one-off, having a water bed in one room, a minstrels' gallery in another. Top-quality breakfasts include local and some organic (
