Can/Tin Opener

A device for opening cans/tins.

Tin cans were invented by the British merchant, Peter Durand, in 1810, and went into production in 1813. However, they were very thick, and had to be hammered open.

As techniques improved, cans became thinner, and in 1858, Ezra J. Warner of Waterburg, Connecticut patented the first opener.

The type most-often-found nowadays - with the wheel that rolls and cuts round the rim of the can - was invented by William Lyman in 1870. This was later improved, in the1920's by 'The Star Can Company' of San Francisco, who added a serrated edge to the wheel.

By the time of the First World War the can opener had become a fixture in most Western kitchens.
