Marine Stewardship Council

An independent, global, non profit making organisation with offices in London, Seattle (USA) and Sydney (Australia) seeking to harness consumer purchasing power to generate change in promoting environmentally sustainable fish supplies. In Britain, some fish is starting to appear as 'Approved by MSC' – you might have to pay a small premium for this, but will know the fish has been caught in a manner to sustain stocks (possibly by line or wide gauge net).

It was first established by Unilever, the world's largest buyer of seafood and WWF the international conservation organisation, in 1997.

By and large, the council has been praised by world leaders for bringing together a broad coalition of supporters from over 100 organisations in more than 20 countries.

75% of their income comes from charitable grants.
