Cancer; relation of, to additives
Each country in the world has a regulation system; since scares in the late 1950's over cyclamates (a sugar substitute, used in processed foods and soft drinks). These were in widespread use until it was discovered that the additive gave test rats bladder cancer.
However, this was only after a dose that in proportion to their size was fifty times the amount recommended for humans.
On this basis an adult would have to drink 388 bottles of soft drink (or a child 133) each day to reach that level. But it was decided that even if it took 100 or 200 times the recommended usage level for cyclamates to be carcinogenic, if they produced cancer they couldn't legally be used in human food.
Many experts are more worried about the general "cocktail" of additives and pesticides we consume. Each might be considered safe on its own, but combinations with many others become unknown territory.
Inject enough table salt or glucose into any animal, and they will get cancer as readily as if injected with massive amounts of many chemicals that are considered dangerous. Shall we therefore ban the use of salt and sugar in our foods?
Many basic items - such as pepper, and other basic condiments - have never been tested!
And what about the heart, the liver and kidneys - Kava Kava (a natural supplement thought of as a "stress-relieving" supplement) is under investigation, in Germany, as a cause of liver damage at the present time.
The controversy is sure to go on for years until more is known about cancer and its causes.
The problem is exacerbated by the fact that we all live much longer, so long term diseases (particularly those of the heart) seem more prevalent. But without many additives - which we can denigrate as E numbers - thousands of people wouldn't live to maturity, but simply die of food poisoning. See "Food Additives"; "E numbers"; "Pesticides"
