Stilton Makers Association (SCMA)

A society, formed in 1936, to represent the interest of Stilton makers and to raise standards.

Members are 'Colston Bassett Dairy', 'Cropwell Bishop Creamery', 'Long Clawson Dairy', 'Quenby Hall' in Hungarton and 'Tuxford & Tebbutt' and 'Websters' at Melton Mowbray.

The organisation was granted a certification trademark for Stilton in 1966 – meaning that imitations could not be sold under the Stilton name in Britain.

In 1996 the association also achieved Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) – effectively extending its trademark across the EU and most of the Western world. For more information see (
