An excellent gastro-pub with rooms (now under the same ownership as The Drunken Duck [q.v]). Although the new team have 'smartened up' an olde-worlde atmosphere that was already excellent, this has been done in an excellent and sympathetic manner so no new visitor would know anything had changed. As well as the village local, there is a comfortable restaurant, which, under the leadership of chef Craig Sherrington uses carefully-sourced produce whenever possible.
The inn makes an excellent base if exploring the Lake District or if seeking a secluded break. The comfortable bedrooms are named after past incumbents of the parish church starting with Edward Whitelock, who was vicar from 1569.
All the bedrooms are individually-designed, but all have flat-screen televisions, digital radios, Wi-Fi Internet access, and en-suite bathrooms with roll-topped baths and separate showers. Some have marvellous views across the Lyth Valley.
They are particularly proud of their breakfasts, which are cooked to order. Note that children aren't allowed in the dining room after 20.00.
