This is a grand hotel dating from the mid 19th century, looking very smart after a major refurbishment programme, and now part of the Puma Hotel Collection. An imposing marble-floored lobby with fluted Corinthian pilasters and glittering chandeliers sets the tone for extensive public areas that boast many fine period features. As does the luxurious Palm Court lounge and sun-deck beyond, bar with deeply comfortable leather armchairs.
About half the bedrooms face the sea, and have good-sized furnished balconies, and many have their own entrance lobbies. They are furnished either with reproduction antique or freestanding darkwood pieces, and have all the expected modern facilities. Good bathrooms come with generous towels (de-luxe rooms come with bathrobes and slippers).
High levels of service include a proper concierge, evening turn-down and extensive 24 hour room service.
Children under 16 may share their parents' room free of charge, and children are generally well-catered-for, with their own club and menu.
Business facilities are also good, and have state-of-the-art support services.
You can eat comfortably in the Regatta restaurant, which offers carefully-cooked traditional dishes, and has a 'smart-casual' dress code (so no jeans, t shirts or trainers); while informal meals are served in the Conservatory and Lounge.
