Five Bells Chailey

Chailey Green, Chailey, Nr. Lewes, East Sussex, BN8 4DA
An idyllic pub, for those seeking low beams and blazing winter log fires. The food here is ambitious, by pub standards – but has not so far been in the gastro-pub mould.

New owners took over at the end of September 2013, and the rear of the pub is now a designated dining area, with crisp white napery. Their new – chef/proprietor led menu, reads well.

Starters such as 'Seared Scallop with Sweet Corn Fritters & Washabi Pea Purée; 'Char-Grilled Asparagus with Crispy-Coated Quails Eggs & Hollandaise Sauce' and 'Tian of Crab with Potato Salsa and Radish & Herb Salad' were listed on their autumn menu.

Dishes such as 'Vegetarian Curry Selection Platter'; 'Pan-Fried Skae Wing with Caper Berry Blackened Butter, Lyonnaise Potatoes & Flash Fried String Courgettes'; 'Confit Duck Leg with Three Bean & Tomato Cassoulet with Chorizo Sausage' and '8oz Ribeye Steak with Beef-Dripping-Fried Fat Chips, Slow-Roasted Plum Tomatoes, Garlic Field Mushrooms, Caramelised Shallots and Peppercorn or Béarnaise Sauce' might follow.

If you have a sweet tooth you might be tempted by 'Espresso Crème Brulée with Pistachio'; 'Glazed Honey & Raisin Bread Butter Pudding with Crème Anglaise' or their selection of excellent home-made Ice Creams.
Cheese lovers are offered local Sussex artisan varieties.
A bar menu is served in the main body of the pub, with interesting dishes such as 'Mini Burgers'; 'Sussex Charmer Rarebit/Rabbit'; 'Local Pork & Leek Sausages with Mustard Grain Mash & Onion Gravy - plus various Platters for sharing.

What did you like about the Restaurant?

The Five Bells is one of the most welcoming cosy pubs I can think of for many miles around. The present owners and the staff have always been so welcoming and attentive, and go out of their way to make sure their customers really enjoy their visit. Really enjoyed recently a light supper - delicious tartlets, brie and wild mushroom with salad leaves beautifully presented on a wooden board accompanied with a bucket of handcut chips. The ideal place to unwind.

What did you like about the Restaurant?

Great service, great food, the guy and girl behind was friendly and took an interest in what I said and heard etc.

What did you not like about the Restaurant?

Only one thing you cannot do any thing about is the flying things like fly's etc whilst eating your food.

What did you like about the Restaurant?

The Owner and his wife/family are some of the nicest people I have had the pleasure to meet, also I got to sit in his classic Porsche.
Going back very soon.
