An excellent Grill, attached to a butchers shop - in what was previously a Café Rouge.
The idea is to choose your meat in the shop and they will cook it for you in the restaurant (in much the same style as 'Fishworks'. If preferred, you can order directly from their extensive menu. The dining area has a rustic feel, with Walnut chairs and tables and bare-wooden Ash floors. There is also artwork by Ian Wilmott - depicting abstract images of Smithfield Market, in days gone by; plus black and white photographs of animals in their living environment.
Perhaps begin with Soup or Terrine of the day; 'H. Forman's Smoked Salmon'; 'Moules Mariniere'; 'Steak Tartare' or 'Rock Oysters with Shallot Vinegar'.
If choosing a grill - these stretch from 'Burgers' and 'Onglet Sauté Bordelaise' through 'Rib Eye Steaks' to 'Barnsley Chop' and 'Char-grilled Calf's Liver with Mash'. A selection of casseroles and braises are also offered - these stretch from 'Braised Beef in Power Station Porter Beer, with Horseradish and Orange Dumplings' to 'Osso Bucco with Creamed Polenta' and 'Honey and Pineapple-glazed Duck Breast with Braised Puy Lentils'.
A list of 'sides' - such as fresh vegetables and sauces - need to be ordered separately.
Desserts focus back to a time when the Grill was king (but brought into the 21st century) - so expect 'Lemon Meringue Pie with Cream'; 'Chocolate Chip Cheesecake with Chocolate Sauce'; 'Eton Mess' and 'Peach Melba with Vanilla Parfait'.
There is a pleasant outside terrace to the rear of the restaurant overlooking the small dock and Ransome's Dock Restaurant opposite.
The Bar area offers morning coffee, patisserie and breakfast items
