The Winner of our Best Pub Food Award for 2010
An excellent gastro pub with serious involvement coming from top chef Nigel Haworth - and it shows. Over a million pounds were spent recently of refurbishment, and the general atmosphere should improve over time when some of the varnish wears off - and the slight Berni Inn feel diminishes.
Head chef Michael Ward heads a kitchen dedicated to sourcing and using top-quality ingredients - bringing these to pub visitors, who might never have experienced their like before, certainly not at this pricing level.
Order your food at the bar or other food ordering points, leaving your table number - then proper service begins.
Listed Starters might include 'Cornfed Goosnargh Chicken Liver Paté with Golden Raisins, Cumberland Sauce & Toasted Home-Made Bread'; 'Warm Flookburgh Shrimps with Blade Mace Butter & a Toasted Muffin' and 'Blackstick's Blue Cheese Soufflé with Chive Sauce & Garden Leaves'.
While 'Fish Pie; topped with Mrs. Kirkham's Lancashire Cheeses'; 'Battered Deep-Fried Haddock, Marrowfat Peas & Real Chips Cooked in Dripping'; 'Wild Cumbrian Rabbit Pie with Butter Puff Pastry & New Potatoes' and 'Cumbrian Fell-Bred Ribeye of Beef, Chips, Onion Rings, Watercress and Field Mushroom' might feature among the mains.
There are also a selection of Platters which are good for sharing (or for the larger appetite), including 'Ploughman's' & 'Home-Cured Meats' - all including carefully-chosen, rather than run of the mill ingredients.
Desserts are of the traditional variety - with maybe 'Burnt English Custard with Strawberry Marmalade'; 'Old English Sherry Trifle' and 'Lemon Meringue Pie' among the favourites. While those with a more savoury tooth will be tempted by their selection of local farmhouse cheeses.
Sunday brings an excellent selection of 'Roasts' (see their website for the weeks offerings) - which are heartily recommended.
In fine weather their garden is a pleasant place to eat.
