What was built as a retreat for a Lancashire mill owner in the mid 18th century is now a comfortable small hotel & restaurant with splendid views over Esthwaite Water.
Chef/proprietor Richard Lee offers a mainly traditional British style of cooking, with just a few nods to modern trends.
Dinner guests are asked to assemble at 19.30 for pre-prandial drinks, they then launch into a carefully cooked dinner (with no choice at the 2nd and 5th [cheese] stages.
So starters such as 'Ham Hock Terrine with Parsley wrapped in Savoy Cabbage Leaves'; 'Roasted Tomato Soup' and 'Duck Leg Confit with Leaves & Vinaigrette' set the style.
Dishes such as 'Courgette & Parmesan Soufflé'; 'Grilled Salmon & Garlic Pea Mash with Lemon Butter Sauce' and 'Smoked Haddock & Mushroom Pancake' have figured in the second course.
While offerings such as 'Roast Pork Loin with Crackling, Sage & Onion Stuffing, Apple Sauce & Gravy'; 'Pot-roasted Goosnargh Chicken with Tarragon Cream Sauce'; 'Pan-fried Noisettes of local Lamb with a Wine & Garlic Jus' and 'Grilled Monkfish Wrapped in Pancetta & Thyme' might be listed among the mains.
Desserts might feature 'Pear & Ginger Tart Tatin'; 'Apple & Plum Crumble' and 'Chocolate Truffle Tear with Raspberry Coulis'.
Finish with their excellent selection of local artisan cheeses.
If you plan ahead, you can stay in one of their comfortable bedrooms.
