An impressive restaurant in a luxurious boutique hotel, originally built as the Lord Provost's residence in the late 17th century.
The restaurant - so named, as the vegetable was possibly first cultivated in Scotland, here - offers modern dishes with plenty of French influence, but has for many years lacked the continuity of chefs to quite reach the highest levels. The menu has an irritating form of menu descriptions - combining Franglais, often to seemingly make simple items seem more impressive.
Their food offerings follow the seasons, and as much is sourced locally as is possible. Starters, such as 'Sweetcorn & Crab Velouté with Crab & Iberico Ham Toasties'; 'Sweet & Sour Young Beetroot with Mozzarella, Sugar Snap Pea & Basil Risotto'; 'Leek & Potato Soup with Arbroath Smokie and Chive Spätzli' and 'Foie Gras & Pigeon Pressing with Spiced Fig & Port Marmalade, Orange Jelly & Hazelnut Praline' set the style.
Maybe to be followed by 'Grilled Lobster Montpellier with Pont Neuf & Salad Gourmand'; 'Lamb Cutlets Reform with Normandy Potatoes & Mint Hollandaise'; 'Lemon Sole Marinière, Tomatoes à la Piémontaise & Dauphinoise Potatoes' and 'Roast Loin of Veal with Sweetbreads and Pea & Mint Purée'.
Try to leave room for desserts, which are impressive, and might list 'Bitter Chocolate Tart, Rosewater & Lemon'; 'Jam Doughnut with Rhubarb & Custard Parfait, Ginger & White Chocolate' and 'Pear William Tart Tatin with Marzipan Ice Cream' among their company.
They also have good farmhouses cheeses, which are served with Pear Chutney, Truffled Honey & Walnut Bread'.
Service is both professional and friendly.
