An excellent restaurant, under the same ownership as L'Ortolan in Shinfield, on the site until recently occupied by Hibiscus.
The elegant restaurant, (made up of three interlinked rooms and formerly a coaching inn) is decorated with wood panelling and has well-spaced tables, making it ideal for that business meeting. The food is of a high standard, and packed with originality but without being outrageous.
The kitchen, headed by Will Holland (again previously at L'Ortolan), has some of Britain's best produce to choose from in this area and this it has duly done.
Menus are refreshingly short, but their contents still makes choosing difficult, while vegetarians have their own options. A Late Spring version included 'Freshly Deressed Crab, Celeriac & Coconut Royale, Tomato Consommé & Asparagus'; 'Ragstone Goats' Cheese Mousse, Beetroot & Raspberry Purée, Pain D'Epice, Balsamic Jelly and Raspberry & Hazelnut dressing' and 'Confit Leg & Smoked Loin of Rabbit, Foie Gras Terrine with Tarragon Mustard' among the starters.
Perhaps to be followed by 'Pan-Fried Halibut Fillet, Caramelised Garlic Risotto, Artichokes, Braised Chicken Wing & Vanilla Velouté'; ' Roast New Season Lamb Loin and Confit Neck Fillet with Liquorice, Pomme Anna, Spring Vegetables & Wild Garlic Leaf' and 'Char-Grilled Free-Range Ballotine, Young Leeks, Wilted Garlic, Strawberry & Tarragon Jus' among the mains.
As much thought and care goes into making the desserts expect the likes of 'Dark Chocolate Tart, Poached Golden Plums, Almond & Pistachio Florentine, Honey & Sauterne Jelly'; 'Poached Rhubarb, Saffron Rice Pudding, Ginger Cake & Rhubarb Sorbet' and 'Caramel Soufflé, White Chocolate Ice Cream, Raspberry & Honeycomb'. While those with a more savoury tooth will enjoy their selection of British & French Farmhouse Cheeses in peak condition.
Service is both professional and friendly.
