This good restaurant, set over two floors, is housed in what was a 19th century chandlery, and is now a Grade II listed building. Expect bare floorboards, and rambling dining rooms, contrasting with retained Georgian features and a general feel of comfort and style.
On the food front, chef/proprietor Simon Newcombe, heads a kitchen team that offers seasonal menus prepared with top-quality mainly Welsh ingredients.
An early summer snapshot brought 'Seared Scallops & Thai-Style Fish Cakes with Chili Jam & Mixed Leaves'; 'Wild Mushroom Risotto with Parmesan Shavings & White Truffle Oil'; 'Asparagus, Baby Spinach & Per Las Cheese Tart with Aioli & Mixed Leaves' and 'Charcuterie of Locally-Produced Meats - Monmouthshire Air-Dried Ham, Coppa, Wild Boar Salami, Bresaola, Artichokes & Olives' among the starters.
'Gnocchi with Summer Vegetables, Pine Nuts, Herbs & Green Salad'; 'Baked Cod Rarebit (sic) with Tomato Salad, Crushed New Potatoes & Sauce Vierge'; 'Bouillabaisse of Fish & Shellfish with Linguine Pasta, Crostini & Rouille' and 'Braised Belly Pork with Chorizo Mash, Pork Cheek & Bean Casserole with Apple Purée' listed among the mains.
They also have a small section of more-simply-prepared items from the Grill. Fish figures prominently, and they have won awards for the quality of their seafood dishes.
If you still have room. You might be tempted by 'Chocolate & Cherry Clafoutis with White Chocolate Ice Cream'; 'Summer Pudding'; 'Crème Brulée' or their selection of artisan cheeses - from Wales and further afield.
The friendliness and efficiency of the service, under the direction of co-proprietor Jane Newcombe, has been particularly praised.
