Earl of March

Lavant, Chichester (Nr.), West Sussex, PO18 0BQ
Find this good gastro pub on the edge of the Goodwood Estate, and it's said that William Blake wrote the words of Jerusalem from the views enjoyed here. Once inside, you can also enjoy their collection of motoring photographs.Although still operating as a local, offering real ales, their good food created by chef Giles Thompson, is the raison d'etre for a visit by many. The seasonally changing menu is backed up by daily-changing specials, often including fish from the local boats and seasonal game from nearby. An early summer snapshot brought 'Pan-Seared Diver Scallops, Pea Purée, Minted Fresh Pea Salad, Crispy Pancetta & Truffle Oil'; 'Wild Watercress Soup with Smoked Trout & Chive Crème Fraiche'; '½ Pint of Shell-On Prawns with Lemon Mayonnaise' and 'Duck Terrine with Pistachio's & Field Mushrooms, Fig Chutney & Toasted Soda Bread' among the starters. 'Pan-Fried Breast of Duck with Hot Pot Potatoes, Creamed Primo Cabbage & Cherry Sauce'; 'Grilled Southdown Lamb Cutlets with Sweetbreads, Rosemary Potatoes, Tomato, Mushrooms & Olive Jus'; 'Beer-Battered Haddock with Hand-Cut Chips, Homemade Tartare Sauce & Minted Pea Purée' and 'Roast Tangmere Peppers & Goats Cheese Tart, Mixed Leaves & Buttered New Potatoes' listed among the mains. If you still have room, you might be tempted by 'Sticky Toffee Pudding with Toffee Sauce & Vanilla Ice Cream'; 'Triple Chocolate Brownie'; 'Eton Mess' or 'Apple & Rhubarb Crumble, Honey & Cinnamon Crème Fraiche'. If you need to stay locally overnight, you can do this very comfortably at Rooks Hill opposite (q.v.).
