Peacock Inn - ShortbridgeShortbridge, Piltdown, East Sussex, TN22 3XA
This atmospheric pub, was badly damaged by a fire a few years ago, but to all new visitors seems to have been invisibly mended. Expect old beams, low ceilings, heavy dark-wood furniture, historical photographs, a winter log fire and a selection of real ales.
On the food front, the menu offers a selection of traditional 'standards' such as 'Scampi in the Basket'; 'Burgers'; 'Fisherman's Pie' and 'Steak, Mushroom and Guinness Pie'.
But there's also a printed and blackboard selection of Specials, with maybe the likes of 'Goats Cheese & Beetroot Salad with Micro Herbs, Pinenuts & Balsamic Reduction'; 'Leek & Stilton Soup'; 'Crab Cake with a Thai Herb Salad & Citrus Dressing' and 'Wild Mushroom Risotto' among the starters.
'Confit Lamb Shoulder Wrapped in Parma Ham with Fondant Potato, Fine Beans & Rosemary Jus'; 'Seared Seabass Fillet with Saffron Potato Pancake, Crushed Peas & Tomato Salsa'; 'Seared Pork Loin with Sautéed Potatoes, Red Cabbage, Apple Chutney & Cider Cream Sauce' and 'Moroccan Vegetable Tagine with Turmeric Rice' listed among the mains.
The sweet-toothed might be tempted by 'Sticky Toffee Pudding'; 'Lemon Posset' and 'Banoffi Pie'.
The food is of a good rather than gastro-pub standard and slightly let down by more than one report of unsmiling service from seemingly-disinterested young girls.
