Find this 19th century coaching inn, now under the same ownership as the popular Castle in Bradford on Avon, on the outskirts of this pretty village, just 5 miles from Frome.
On the food front, the system is to find a numbered table, place your order at the bar – then table service takes over. The kitchen's aims are in no way those of a gastro pub, instead offering honestly-cooked pub classics, all produced in-house.
More traditional listings include 'Ploughman's' (with Vintage Barbers Cheddar), various Salads and items from the Grill.
Other popular lunchtime mains might include 'Ale-Battered Haddock Fillet with Chunky Chips & Mushy Peas'; 'Home-Cooked Honey Roast Ham with Fried Duck Egg & Hand-Cut Chips'; 'Creamy Chicken, Leeks & Bacon Pie' and 'Vegetarian Vegetable Lasagne'.
During the evening, the menu expands to include the likes of 'Mint & Rosemary Marinated Lamb Rump with Savoy Cabbage, Celeriac, Bacon & Carrot Roulade & Port Jus'; Honey-Roast Duck Breast with Sweet Potato & Thyme Mash, Cherry Jus & Deep-Fried Sage Leaves' and 'Grilled Venison Haunch with Roasted Garlic Mash, Rosemary Jus & Honey Glazed Carrots'
A few desserts such as 'Chocolate Brownie with Vanilla Ice Cream' and 'Raspberry Crème Brulée' are there to tempt you if you still have room.
A no booking policy means avoiding peak times if you're in a hurry – or arriving early.
