This Grade I listed pub with comfortable bedrooms, and partly dating back to the times of Elizabeth I, is one of the finest examples of a timber-framed building in Sussex. It also boasts a fireplace by the carver Grinling Gibbons plus a splendid oak-panelled restaurant, incorporating a private chapel.
It has been run since 1991 by the Blundell family, but over the years the reputation of the food on offer has grown considerably - so much so, that it now draws customers in from many miles around. The kitchen matching pub dishes with carefully-sourced seasonal ingredients. Order at the bar, then eat there, in the more formal restaurant or in their beautifully-laid-out garden.
This ranges from a selection of Freshly Baked Baguettes and Ciabattas (much enjoyed by one inspector) and various Ploughman's (made with home-cooked ham, duck liver paté or various local artisan cheeses) only available at lunchtime through traditional pub dishes such as 'Steak, Harvey's Ale & Mushroom Pie' and 'Sausages of the Day with Creamed Potato & Caramelised Red Onion Gravy' to more elaborate dishes such as 'Marinated Barbary Duck Breast with Caramelised Plums & Spicy Red Wine Jus'; 'Slow-Roast Half Blade of Plumpton College Pork with Calvados & Pear Sauce and Crispy Crackling' and various Specials including fresh fish listed on a blackboard.
A summer snapshot brought 'Mixed Summer Berry Parfait with Florentine Biscuit and Lemon & Mint Crème Fraiche'; 'Warm Chocolate Fondant with Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream' and 'Hot Plum Tart Tatin' listed among the puds.
